Florida entered the Union in 1845, as the 27th state. The state’s economy is highly diversified, driven by tourism, international trade, health and financial services, agriculture and high-technology manufacturing.

Most of Florida has a humid subtropical climate. The average annual temperature ranges between 68-77, depending on the season. The state receives a yearly average of 53 inches of precipitation, almost entirely in the form of rain. The state has long, hot, rainy summers, short and usually mild winters and high percentages of total possible sunshine.

According to the 2000 census, there were 15,982,378 inhabitants. During the 1990’s Florida was the country’s 7th fastest growing state. The average density of population was 296.4 people per sq mile. Important ethnic groups include Cubans, who are concentrated in metropolitan areas such as Miami and Tampa and many of the state’s Seminoles live on five reservations in the state. Florida’s largest cities are Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa, Saint Petersburg, and Hialeah.

Florida’s first public school system was established in 1868. In the late 1990’s, Florida public schools had an enrollment of 1,725,000 pupils in K-8. There were 656,000 students in grades 9-12. Private schools enroll another 273,000 students. The school system also includes the Florida School for the Deaf and Blind at St. Augustine, which is state supported. There are 140 degree granting institutions of higher education enrolling about 535,000 students. There are another 124,000 students enrolled in private universities. FLORIDA UNIVERSITIES
